Dear Parents & Caregivers,

VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE APPEAL

Today we had a very successful appeal for the terrible fires in Victoria.  There were so many people who lost their lives, their houses and all of their belongings.  Many schools were severely damaged.  We are so lucky here at Carlton with all of the fabulous buildings and teaching and learning resources.  The staff at Carlton would like to thank the parents and students for their generosity.  The money raised will be sent to the Red Cross for distribution and in next week’s newsletter we will announce the class that had the longest gold coin line and the class that raised the most amount of money.

STAGE RESOURCES and VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS

We will send out notes for stage resources and voluntary contributions.

Stage Resources:

These are the costs for any items like text books, book bags, craft materials, and  Mathletics. Each stage fee is a little different because of items included.  For example:  Kindergarten includes Chicken Raising, Stage 1 includes Dance To Be Fit and Text Books and Stage 3 includes two types of diaries for Year 6 and Magazines for Year 5.

We would ask parents to pay this amount as soon as possible.

Text Box: Costs:
	Kindergarten $70
	Stage 1 $55
	Stage 2 $60
	Stage	3 $80

Voluntary Contributions:

For a number of years now, parents have asked for Stage costs and Voluntary Contributions Fees to be collected at the one time. If you can manage both fees at once then please send them in together if not we would like to have stage costs as soon as possible and  all voluntary contributions in by the end of term when we will have a lucky draw program with fantastic prizes.

Voluntary Contribution Fees for 2009:

The contribution fee this year is the same for the last 3 years

·                    $50 for the first child

·                    $70 for 2 or more children

PUT ‘ICE’ INTO YOUR MOBILE PHONE

The Ambulance Service is encouraging everyone with a mobile phone to put ‘ICE’ (In Case of Emergency) into their mobile phones. The ambulance service says at accidents most people have a mobile phone but ambulance officers do not know who to call when they look at all the entries in the mobile phone book. There is a nation wide program now to ask everyone to record an emergency contact number under ICE.

GENERAL 2008 PERMISSION NOTE

Next week we will send out a general consent note to parents relating to short walking excursions, the media and use of the internet. We ask that all parents have a look at the note and sign and return it to your class teacher as soon as possible.

MATHLETICS

Mathletics is a very exciting on-line web based mathematics program that the whole school will be using again this year. We will hold an information session for parents on Monday 2 March at 6:00pm.  This is a wonderful new online program that children can challenge themselves against students from all over the world.

In 2008 Carlton School won the WB Kids online competition against other children in Australia.  We aim to keep that tradition going!

Success for Boys and Girls - Anti Bullying Program and Taekwondo

The school will continue this successful program that was introduced last year.  Boys and girls in Years 3-6 are welcome to be part of the Taekwondo Anti - Bullying Program.  The program will run for 5 weeks this term beginning on Thursday, March 12, 2009.  This program is held during lunchtime and is well supervised.  The cost this term will be $20.  A note has been sent home with more details.  If your child misses out this term we will have two sessions in Terms 2 and 3.

Drumming

We would like to continue the Arabic drumming group that was introduced into the school last year.  We have a very experienced professional drummer to teach the students but this year we will extend the program and have an experienced group and a beginning group.  This is a very popular activity and teachers have nominated students to be part of the group.  Students will meet during lunch time for their lessons.  We look forward to some more fantastic performances this year.

UNIFORMS

There has been an overwhelming response to the Uniform shop.  Many items have sold out and the shop is waiting on more supplies.  Just a reminder that the Uniform shop is open on Monday and Friday mornings from 8.30 am until 8.55am.  It is also open on Thursday afternoon from 2.30pm until 2.55pm.  The shop is run by volunteers and they have other commitments after the closing times.  Could you please assist them by using the shop on the days and times noted above?

DONATION

We would like to thank Willeen Wymes of Willison Road for her very generous donation of a telescope and hula hoops to the school.  They are in excellent condition and will be used by the school.
