Dear Parents

SAD NEWS
For quite a while
Mrs Austin’s husband has been very ill. Unfortunately he lost his battle with a
brain tumour and passed away early on Tuesday morning. Mrs Austin is an extremely valued member of
the school community and has been involved with the school for many, many
years. She has continued to work
tirelessly for the school during her husband’s illness. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Mrs
Austin in this very difficult time.

VICTORIAN BUSHFIRE APPEAL
Congratulations
to the students and their parents. We
had a fantastic result with $2400 being raised for the appeal. This money will be sent to the Red Cross and
distributed to those people in need.
With such an outstanding result we have decided to hand out one
certificate to each grade. Every class
participated and some of the results were very close.

COMMUNITY CLUB NEWS
Come along and
join us for our first meeting of the year, Thursday 26th February,
9:15am in the staffroom. The community club is a parent group that meets on the
4th Thursday of the month. It provides a great opportunity to hear
what is happening in the school and to be involved in raising funds for the
school. Each month there is a short talk at the beginning. This month Mrs
Tollis will be talking about “How to help your child settle in to school”.
Everyone is very
welcome and if you are new to the school please come along and find out what is
happening.. For our fist meeting we will be providing morning tea. Our March
meeting will the AGM and the election of office holders.
CLEAN UP SCHOOL DAY
On Friday
February 27 the school is having the annual clean Up School Day. All students will be participating in this
activity and there is no cost involved.
We do ask that all parents send their children along with plastic bags
to put the rubbish in and a set of gloves to protect their hands.
SCRIPTURE
Scripture classes
for students in Years 1 – 6 began this week.
Children in Years 1 and 2 have scripture on Wednesday from 9:30 until
10am. Children in Years 3-6 have Scripture
on Wednesday from 10:05am until 10.35am. Parents have already indicated which
scripture class they would like their children to attend. Those children not attending scripture
classes will receive an educational program in place of scripture. Scripture teachers are volunteers and do not
get paid for the time spent in the school.
They are not trained teachers but do provide as very valuable service to
the community. Please remind your
children to always display their very best manners during scripture.
STUDENT RESOURCE FEE
Parents the
amounts for the resource fee in the newsletter were last year’s amounts. Please do not send the money in until you
receive a letter regarding the correct amount.
STUDENT DETAILS UPDATE
This week we will
send a yellow note out to all students so that parents can provide the school
with updated details for our records. It
is important for the school to have records of new phone numbers, emergency
contact details so that we can contact you if necessary. This year the children in Years 3 and 5 who
sit for the National Literacy and Numeracy Assessment will have all of their
details printed on their test sheet. The
details of students will be extracted from our computer data base next week so
could you please return all yellow Student Detail sheets this week?
KOGARAH HIGH OPEN NIGHT
Kogarah High is
changing the way in which they let students know about the school. This year they are having an Open Night to
allow both the students and their parents to visit the school. Please read the notice about this in the
newsletter
PLAYGROUP
We are in need of
someone to take over the running of the Playgroup that was held on Tuesday
mornings in the Basement at the school.
The playgroup ran from 9am until 11am.
There is a lot of equipment for the young children. If you are interested could you please
contact Mrs Sadleir?
PLAY EQUIPMENT
Students are not allowed to use the fixed play
equipment in the mornings before school or at recess. There is a roster for different grades to use
the equipment at lunch times but only with teacher supervision. No
student is allowed to use the equipment after school as there is no supervision
available. We do not want any
accidents to occur so we are asking parents to please keep the children away
from the equipment.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The swimming
carnival for years 3 – 6 will be held on Tuesday 24 February at Sans Souci
Leisure Centre. Only those children in
Years 2 – 6 who can swim 50 metres at a competitive level have been asked to
compete. Notes have gone home regarding
this excursion. Please note that there
is no canteen facility available at the pool for lunches. Children will need to bring recess, lunch, bottle of water, sports uniform, swimmers
and towel, underclothes as well as a hat and wear sunscreen. Parents are invited to attend but make their
own way to the pool and pay their pool entrance fee when they arrive.
HEALTH CARE PLAN
If your child has
a chronic medical condition, could you please come to the school office and ask
for a health care form which needs to be completed by your specialist. The school needs to know what condition the
child has, what the symptoms are, who to call and how to treat the child if the
child is sick. Parents also need to
provide four small passport size photos for the health care plan. Class teaches are also given a copy of the
plan so that they are aware of the condition and can monitor the child during
lessons if necessary.
SCHOOL WEB
SITE
Just a reminder
that the school website is updated regularly and contains information regarding
the School Council, P & C Association, Community Club as well as examples
of children’s work and much more regarding the running of the school. The website address can be found at the front
of this newsletter
LATE TO SCHOOL
There are an
increasingly large number of students arriving late for school. The bell goes at 9am. There can be a short assembly for students in
stages but if a child is continually late then that can impact on the learning
of your child and other children. When a child is late coming
to school, you, the parent, must accompany the child to the front Office and
fill in a late slip.
PERMISSION AND CONSENT FORMS
All students in
the school have been given a Permission and Consent form for you to sign and
return to school as soon as possible.
This form asks your permission to take children on short walks in the
local area and for permission to use photographs for media purposes (inclusion
in Annual School Report, on the school website or in the newsletter etc). If you do not want your child to be
photographed then that is your right.
Please return the form with that decision clearly marked.
LUNCH BOX TIPS - FRUIT
Best choices - Fresh or tinned
fruit. Dried fruit is sticky, and high in sugar, so eat occasionally or as part
of a meal.
Best left out - Dried fruit bars and ‘straps’ are very high in sugar,
low in fibre and stick to children’s teeth causing tooth decay.
ENVIRO TIP
Even though it
has been raining, water restrictions are still in place.
You can help by keeping a container of water in the fridge
so that you won't need to run the water down the sink until it's cool enough to
drink.

BOOK CLUB
Students have received information regarding the books available for the
Book Club. Money and orders are due back
at school by Monday 23 February, 2009.
Orders and the money should be placed in an envelope with the name of
the child and class clearly written on the front. The envelope should b sealed and taken to the
Front Office.
PARKING AROUND
THE SCHOOL
Parents, when driving or parking around our school please observe the
road rules. Some are listed below. Heavy fines will be imposed if found disobeying
the rules. Parking officers regularly patrol our school area. Many parents have
received fines just recently fro illegal parking. Don’t be one of those people!
No Stopping
You cannot stop for any
reason.
Double Parking
At any time it is illegal
to double park particularly around schools as it reduces driver visibility
