Dear Parents & Caregivers,

WELCOME BACK

We would like to welcome back everyone for Term Two. Welcome to all our new students and parents. We would also like to welcome Ms Lynne Christie. Ms Christie brings a wealth of experience as a classroom teacher and will be filling a number of roles in the school this term, including library and Support teacher learning assistance.

Mrs Tollis will be relieving Principal for the remainder of the year. Thank you to Mrs Sadleir for relieving as Principal in Term 1. Ms Rasmussen will continue as relieving Deputy Principal and Mrs Ferguson will be relieving as ES1 Assistant Principal.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY

On Tuesday we joined with staff of Arncliffe PS and Rockdale PS for a combined staff development day, hosted at Carlton. We have formed a community of schools to work with each other on a comprehension project over the next few years. Our academic partner Greg Leany and Julie Solomon, Literacy consultant, supported us as we looked at how to develop critical thinking skills in our students.

BUILDING PROGRESS

I’m sure you’ve all noticed the amazing progress of the new classroom block. We hope that the building will be handed over early next week and classes will move in sometime after that. The classrooms look fantastic with state of the art equipment and a great colour scheme. The new walkway links the building to the administration block giving great access for students.

The new netball/basketball court has now begun construction. This project is very dependant on the weather, but we are hoping it will take about 8 weeks. While it is under construction there will be no grass area.

We must congratulate the students on the fantastic way that they have coped with severe disruption to the playground for a long period of time. When everything is complete they will enjoy fantastic new facilities.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

From week two until the end of Term 3, the whole school assembly will be held at 11.30am on a Monday.  This change has occurred because the ground is often cold and damp in Terms 2 and 3 when school first starts at 9am.

ANZAC DAY

At 11:30 am Friday (tomorrow) we will hold our ANZAC Day service and we would like to extend an invitation to all parents to attend this important ceremony. We ask all students to bring a posy of flowers that will be laid during the service in remembrance of those who have suffered in war. All flowers will be donated to local nursing homes at the end of the day. If it is raining the service will take place in the school hall.

ANZAC Day is the one day in the year that people stop and think about the effects of wars on men, women and children. The day reminds us each year of the suffering and sacrifice that so many people have made for their countries. Today, soldiers from Australia are involved in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as peace keeping in East Timor, the Pacific Islands and a number of other countries.  We hope that these conflicts will end quickly and our men and women in the armed services return to Australia safely.

“AR” LISTS

Parents have asked where to find the Accelerated Reader Lists. Accelerated Reader is an individual reading program that students in Year 3 to 6 participate in by reading books and completing an on-line comprehension.

SCRIPTURE NEWS

Due to the National Assessment Program in Week 3, there will be no Scripture or religious instruction for Years 3 to 6 on that day. Infants scripture will continue as per usual.

KINDERGARTEN HOME TIME

Kindergarten parents are reminded that the new home time is 3:00pm. This may cause more traffic issues around the school. Please note if you park illegally parking officers visit the schools and the fines are substantial.

MOTHERS’ DAY STALL

Thank you to all the parents who have been working very hard to make our Mothers’ Day stall a success. Our stall will be held next Thursday 7 May in the hall. Each class will be timetabled to visit the hall between 9:00am and 11:00. We have a lot of gifts, so each child should be able to purchase two or more gifts each (if this is needed for special people). Prices will range from $2 - $10 per gift. To wrap the last of the gifts we need helpers on Tuesday 5 May between 9 – 11 am.  Please come along and help. Morning tea will be provided to helpers.  Also any parent that could help with selling the Mothers’ Day gifts at the stall next Thursday would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Debbie Jacobson on  0418270292 if you are able to help.  The class that has won the Hungry Jack vouchers will be announced at the Monday assembly.

LIVING EGGS PROGRAM

Next week eggs will arrive in the Kindergarten rooms for the children to watch chickens hatch over the next two weeks. This is a very exciting time for everyone as many of our students in other years will remember the time when they were in Kindergarten and watched chickens hatch.

NATIONAL ASSSESSMENT PROGRAM

The National Assessment program will be conducted across Australia on the same days for all students in Years 3 and 5, according to the following timetable.

Wednesday 13 May Reading Test

Please complete the details on the front of the envelope and return to your class teacher before Friday 8 May, 2009. Thank you for your support.
