Dear Parents & Caregivers,

KINDERGRATEN ENROLMENTS 2010

We are now starting to take Kindergarten enrolments for 2010. When enrolling your child please ensure that you complete the form fully so the school has all the necessary information.  Kindergarten children must turn FIVE years old by 31 July, 2010 in order to be enrolled.  You will need to complete an enrolment form, bring original proof of your child’s age (birth certificate, if born in Australia or passport if born overseas), one utility bill to prove address, parental proof of residency and your child’s Immunisation History Statement. This statement lists all details of vaccines given to your child before school age. These are recorded by your doctor who sends the details to Medicare and they send the Immunisation History Statement to your home address.  Please advise the school of any separation/access details e.g. court orders, if the situation applies. Strict boundaries apply for enrolment. If you are aware of any neighbours who are intending to enroll their child at Carlton, please pass this information on.

Please Note: We will only enroll siblings from outside the school boundaries who are in Years K to 5.

STAFF NEWS

Congratulations to Mrs Amanda Miller, 2A, who successfully applied for permanent classroom teacher position at the school, through the merit selection process. Mrs Miller is a very experienced teacher with teaching experience in the United Kingdom.

PREPARING FOR WINTER

Winter is now upon us and the days have suddenly turned cold. Please keep the following points in mind:-

·    Students still need to wear a school hat. The sun is just as strong in winter.

·    Our rooms are well heated, but students need appropriate warm clothing for the playground. The school uniform provides a warm jacket and jumper.

·    Some students wear too many layers to school and can become overheated in classrooms. Kindy children particularly need to know how to take jackets on and off.

·    Please ensure your child has tissues with them. Keep a supply in their school bag.

·    Scarves need to be of a short length, for safety reasons, and in the school colour of blue.

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to all the students from Carlton Public School who participated in the Zone Cross Country on Thursday 4 June.  Congratulations to Jessica G (3/4W) who finished in 4th place and we look forward to hearing her results from the Regional Cross Country being held today.

The following students also placed 5th – Claire B, Hadi M & Jarod D and 6th – Nour N & Ben P at the Zone Carnival, making them reserves.  Also congratulations to Hadi M, Ben P, Richard L & Kyle V who were the champion team for the 10 year old boys.

GRIME SCENE INVESTIGATORS

Last Thursday, 8 talented scientists from 5/6F participated in the Grime Scene Investigation at the Sylvania estuary of the Georges River. The day was run by Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre to celebrate World Environment Day, 2009. The students had a wonderful day, cruising the Georges River, taking plankton samples, dissecting fish, taking water samples to test the pH levels and the turbidity of the water, examining the biodiversity of the water way and constructing food chains of the marine environment. The students came back with loads of new knowledge as well as many great ideas to help make our environment healthy. The students were very happy to discover, through their investigations that the Sylvania estuary is in very good shape with clear, clean water and a wide rage of biodiversity. The students enjoyed this very worthwhile day immensely and are looking forward to sharing their ideas with the students at Carlton Public School.

SWINE FLU REMINDER

The DET has a range of measures in place. Parents can view these on the DET website. It is important that we act on accurate information, so we ask all parents, if they are concerned, to contact the office as soon as possible. Please ensure you allay the fears of your children, as they are often only hearing part of a story. There have been no reported cases at Carlton Public.

There has been a directive dated 3 June from the Director General that all students who travel to Greater Melbourne are to be quarantined for 7 days, from the date of their last day in Melbourne.

We ask that all parents and caregivers adhere to these guidelines, for the health of all students. If you seek additional information, please refer to the DET website.

DEBATING NEWS

Each year, Carlton Public School runs Debating and is represented by dedicated and enthusiastic students from Stage Three.  This year is no different!    Our dynamic team include; Anna P, Bill E, Marc B-M and Nellie Z.   Last Wednesday, we went to Beverly Hills Public School to debate against Kingsgrove Public School.  The topic was “That homework is a necessary evil” and we were the negative team.  Our team worked eagerly to get their arguments against homework organised and their hard work paid off when they won!  The team will continue their hard work next week when we debate at McCallum’s Hill Public School against Beverly Hills and again in week 10 at Kingsgrove Public School, where we will debate against McCallum’s Hill.  Congratulations on a great job!
