Dear Parents & Caregivers,

BUILDING EDUCATION REVOLUTION NEWS

We have been successful in our application for a new 2 storey, 6 classroom homebase block. This will further enhance our school facilities and increase playground space. At this time, a work schedule is yet to be finalised. I am sure the staff and students will adjust to further building work on our site.

RECORDER CONCERT

Congratulations to the students who performed at the Sydney Opera House last night. Our students were part of a 700 strong recorder ensemble and started the night with a stirring piece, accompanied by the Millennium Marching Band. One of the highlights of the night was when the string ensemble joined the recorder players on stage, a total of 900 musicians!  Well done to Daisy Zhang, who was given a special mention during the rehearsal for playing very well. Thank you to Mrs Aitken, Mrs Tilse and Miss McNab  who have worked with the students all year to prepare them for the concert.

SCHOOL TELEPHONES

Some people are experiencing difficulties getting onto the school by telephone as the school has many hundreds of call coming in and out daily. The main number is 9587 3717 and you might like to try a second number 9587 3162.

PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION

Parents are reminded that the playground is not supervised before 8:30am. Students who arrive before this time are to be seated and are not to play games. We are concerned about the number of students who arrive very early or are not picked up until quite late. We have a very well resourced before and after school care program, which is the safest place for the children to be if parents have work commitments.

STAFF NEWS

All the best to Mrs Hanley who commences maternity leave at the end of this week.

HALF YEARLY REPORTS

Reports will be sent home on Thursday 9 July.  Please read the report carefully. We have reported your child’s progress in the Key Learning Areas in terms of 5 different achievement levels.  They are:

·        Limited

·        Basic

·        Sound

·        High

·        Outstanding

Each report also carries an assessment of effort for each Key Learning Area, with a comment.  There is a grading for Social Development and Learning Attitudes.  We believe that the report will give you a very clear indication of how your child is progressing at school.  If you wish to discuss any aspect of this report please contact your class teacher.

TERM 3 SPORTS

Next term we are offering: Mini Tennis lessons for Stage 1, 2 and 3, Tennis Lessons for Stages 2 and 3, Basketball lessons for Stages 1,2,and 3, Gymnastic lessons for Stages 2 and 3, Swimming lessons for Stages 2 and 3.

Students will also continue to play winter PSSA for a few weeks before the cricket and softball season commences. Students not playing any of the above will play sport at school. Please get money and notes back to school as soon as possible as sports fill up quickly.

OUTSTANDING RESOURCE AMOUNTS

All families who have not paid their class resource amounts are asked to do so by the end of week 11. We need to finalise accounts for the end of the financial year.  Parents are reminded that school expenses can now be claimed through your tax return, if you are eligible.

Education Tax Refund – Don't forget to claim

How do I claim the Education Tax Refund?

  • In your tax return.
  • If you don't lodge a tax return, claim on a separate form or over the phone.
  • If you use a tax agent, make sure you ask them to claim for you.

The Education Tax Refund lets you claim up to 50% of eligible education expenses for school children. If you are eligible, you can get back up to $375 for each primary student and up to $750 for each secondary student.

You can claim things like text books, stationery and even internet costs.

If you receive Family Tax Benefit Part A for a child at primary or secondary school, you will be eligible. Some other people are eligible too, to find out more about this and other information such as what you can and can't claim go to australia.gov.au/educationtaxrefund or call the Tax Office on 13 28 61.

*      Remember, you need to keep all receipts for expenses you claim.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR DEBATING TEAM

Another fantastic effort from our debating team! The team went to McCallum’s Hill Public School for the second round in the debating competition. The topic was ”Science causes more harm than good” and we were the affirmative team. We debated well and won! Congratulations Carlton debating team.

WEBSITE NEWS

We are now loading excursion notes onto the school website. If you lose a note please go to the website and download a replacement. To access the school website google “Carlton Public School” and then save in your favourites to access again later.

IS YOUR CHILD USING THE LIBRARY

The library contains a wide collection of books and is staffed by a teacher librarian five days a week.  We strongly encourage children to borrow books and ask parents to ensure that books are cared for and returned on time.  A library bag, which can be purchased from the library, helps to protect books when they are being taken to and from school.  Kindergarten children are provided with a library bag as part of the class resource fee.  The library is computerised and we use a Bar Code borrowing system that tells the school what books have been borrowed.  The Internet is also installed in the library for use with classes only.
