Dear Parents and Caregivers

WELCOME BACK

We would like to welcome students and parents back to school. A very special warm welcome to our new families who have recently enrolled at Carlton Public School.   Welcome back Mrs Palmer and Mrs Nikolokopoulos who are returning from Maternity Leave. Mrs Aitken will be relieving as Deputy Principal for the remainder of the year.

Mrs Sadleir sends her thanks to the students for the lovely gift they gave her of a Seiko watch. She says she will think of them whenever she looks at the time. Thank you also to the Community Club of the lovely gift of a mobile phone for when she travels.

Congratulations to Mrs Hanley on the birth of her baby girl, Haylee. Mum and baby are doing very well.

At our K-6 assembly in week 2 (Monday at 11:30 am) we will be awarding certificates for the Computer competition, silver awards and prefect badges. If the weather is wet, we will move the assembly to the hall.

This term we have many things happening, starting next Tuesday with our Athletics Carnival for students Years 3 to 6 and the following week after that, the K-2 Carnival will be held. In other weeks we will have: a Chocolate Drive, Book Fair, Book Week shows, Tournament of Minds, Fathers Day Stall, School Photographs, just to mention some of the things happening. Your help and support with any of these events is welcome.

STAFF NAME BADGES

All our staff are proudly wearing their new name badges. This will help parents and visitors identify staff members and get to know their names.

CONGRATULATIONS SHIRLEY GU – CHESS CHAMPION

Shirley Gu, from 5/6S, has become the NSW Under 12 Chess Champion. It is the first time in a decade that a girl has won the NSW title, in this boy dominated championship. The NSW Junior Chess Championships were held during the school holidays. This is the highest-level junior chess tournament in the state.

After the three-day competition, Shirley Gu scored 9 points out of 10, one point ahead of her nearest rivals.  She was the only undefeated player in the whole championship. The Under 18 title was won by our ex Carlton boy, Peng Yu Chen. Congratulations, Shirley.

CONGRATULATIONS ALEXANDER BORG

Congratulations to Alexander Borg who has just gained a place at the Sydney Region Dance Camp. This is a highly sort after opportunity and allows students to train at the facilities of the Sydney Dance Company. Well done, Alexander.

 POGO PULSE POGO-THON

On Thursday 9th July at lunchtime the whole school was treated to a school first and world first (as far as we know) in the very first ever Pogo-thon fundraiser!

The following students jumped continuously on a pogo stick to fundraise money for the team to help purchase more equipment. Congratulations to:

Nathan Chalak, Pawit Laosuksri, Brandon Mazevski, Braydon Pilot, Hendrix Timoti, Damien Ho, Susan Huang, Alexis Olsen, Sarah Ishak, Michael Elias, Sleiman Choker, Michael Dadson, Peckett Nicholls

Eight members of the team managed to successfully jump for 50 minutes continuously!!!!! This is an amazing result and a true indicator of how far their fitness and skills have come with Pogo Pulse.

Well done Pogo Pulse Team members and a special thanks to all the students and teachers that came out to cheer the pogo riders on and a big thank you to 5/6F for helping set up/pack up and run the Pogo-thon!

ANAPHYLAXIS – Nut awareness

This is a friendly reminder to all parents seeking your support in not sending to school any peanut butter sandwiches and where possible no other peanut products. Some of our students have anaphylaxis, which is an acute allergic reaction in humans and other mammals. Minute amounts of allergens like peanuts may cause a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis may occur after ingestion, skin contact, injection of an allergen or, in rare cases, inhalation.

100 DAYS of KINDERGARTEN

Yes! It is time to celebrate children in Kindergarten being at school for their first 100 days.   WOW! On Friday 31July (tomorrow) we will have a special cake and the students will be involved in fun activities before lunch. To help with the party mood, kindergarten children should come dressed in green clothes as it is National Tree Day for Schools and they will be planting trees after lunch.  Parents should feel free to come along and join in the celebration at 12:45pm for the cutting of the cake.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Year 3 - 6 Athletics Carnival is to be held on Tuesday 4 August and will be held at Bexley Oval, Stoney Creek Rd, Bexley.  Please return your note and money to the class teacher by Monday. We ask all students to participate in the carnival and to wear their house colour where possible eg. a red shirt, red ribbon etc. All students should be at school promptly at 9:00am to catch buses. Parents are invited to make it an enjoyable day with a picnic with friends and students. The canteen will operate a “buy as you go” BBQ at the oval. Don’t forget to dress in warm clothes.

BOOK CLUB

This week all students were given the latest catalogue and order form from Scholastic Book Club. If you wish to order please mark the books required on the order form and write your child’s name, class, and amount on the form and also on an envelope with the correct money enclosed. These orders are due at the office before Monday 10 August, 2009.

FRIDAY INDOOR SWIMMING LESSONS FOR YEAR 3 – 6

There are still a few places available for swimming lessons as part of Friday morning sport. The cost is $100 for ten lessons.  Please come to the office and complete a form ASAP.

CHOCOLATE DRIVE

It is time for our Annual Chocolate Drive. This year we will have Cadbury’s chocolates, to sell for $2.50 each. We are asking each family in the school to take one box containing 24 items to sell at work or to friends and relatives. All families will be given one box of chocolates to sell unless they return a slip indicating they are unable to sell or buy any chocolates.

Please try very hard to sell the chocolates as all the money goes to the education of your child.   We again have a fantastic prize program with four major draws. All families that sell a complete box of chocolates (total $60) will go in the prize draw. The more boxes you sell, the more chances you have.

Prize pool:      1 IPOD

1 Portable DVD player

1 Digital Camera

1 Digital Camera

Four tickets will be drawn, with the first ticket drawn having first choice of a prize.  Chocolates will be sent home on Thursday 6 August and all money and unsold chocolates are to be returned by Thursday 20 August. Families are welcome to see the office for additional boxes. Miss Rasmussen would appreciate any parent help in distributing the chocolates to children on Thursday 6 August.

BOOK FAIR WEEK 2 - TERM 3

The book fair will arrive on Monday 3 August and be ready for parents to view that afternoon from 2.00pm – 5.00pm.  PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A VIEWING TIME ONLY – NO PURCHASES WILL BE MADE. This year the fair will remain in the library all week and students will be invited to purchase books in their allocated class timetabled slots.

A huge thankyou to Mr Pilot, Mrs Danzey (Mrs Miller’s mother) and to those other parents who donated copies of the Daily Telegraph magazine “Man on the Moon 40th Anniversary” to Stage 3 for use in future years in the teaching of the HSIE/Science topic Space. Altogether over 230 copies were donated. Thankyou, we really appreciate it.

NATIONAL TREE DAY

Sunday 2 August 2009 - National Tree Day, is Australia's biggest community tree planting event. Thanks to people from all walks of life, coming together to green up Australia, the total number of native trees and shrubs planted at Tree Day sites since 1996 is over 10.5 million! The planting of these local native trees helps to provide food and shelter for Australia's wildlife, increasing native biodiversity and combating the habitat loss that threatens much of our wildlife.

Schools Tree Day, will be held on 31 July and is a special day for Australia’s school children. Our budding Kindy environmentalists will be doing their bit for our country by planting native trees and shrubs and beautifying their school grounds this Friday, as part of 100 days of Kindy.
