Dear Parents & Caregivers,

ATHLETIC CARNIVAL K-2

Year 3 - 6 Athletics Carnival is to be held on Wednesday  12 August and will be held at Bexley Oval, Stoney Creek Rd, Bexley.  We ask all students to participate in the carnival and to wear their age colour where possible eg. a red shirt, red ribbon etc. All students should be at school promptly at 9:00am to catch buses. Parents are invited to make it an enjoyable day with a picnic with friends and students. The canteen will operate a “buy as you go” BBQ at the oval.

STAGE 3 MINI FETE

On Tuesday 18 August, Stage 3 will be holding their annual ‘Mini Fete’. Due to the start of Ramadan in week 5, the Mini Fete has been brought forward so that all students can enjoy the fun. Please note that the Sausage Sizzle will be held on this day and NOT the 27 August as was stated on the Sausage Sizzle order form.

All of the activities have been planned by our students and they will be running all of the stalls. We hope to raise enough money to cover the Year 6 Farewell and also to buy another interactive white board for the school.

Please support the Mini Fete by giving your child a few dollars to spend. It will be a fun afternoon. Activities will include a disco, Sausage Sizzle, face painting, beauty parlours, bubble blowing, lucky dips, cafes, Snap- on bracelets and key rings, food and drinks stalls, trash and treasure and basketball and soccer shootouts.

Parents and friends are most welcome to come along and join in the fun from 1pm. We hope to see you all at our Mini Fete.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Tuesday year 3-6 went to Bexley Oval for our annual Athletics Carnival. Thank you to all the teachers and students who took part in a fantastic day. It was great to see so many parents come to cheer on their children. A huge congratulations to Mrs Hanley, who organised the Carnival last term and then turned up with her newborn daughter to keep an eye on us all. The Zone Athletics Carnival will be held over two days Thursday 20 August and Thursday 27 August. Those students who are representing Carlton will be told soon. Remember 8, 9 and 10 year olds are classified as Juniors and only 3 students from this age group compete at Zone.

STEWART HOUSE

The final day to return Stewart House bags is tomorrow. Please take the bags to the school hall. Stewart House is a charity that is supported by teachers and staff of Dept of Education and Training. Many of our students have benefited by going to Stewart House to be part of their program.

BOOK CLUB

Next Monday, 10 August, is the last day for book club orders. If you wish to order from the current catalogue please leave your completed order and correct money in an envelope at the office by 9am. No late orders will be accepted.

100 DAYS OF KINDERGARTEN.

On Friday 31 July, Kindergarten celebrated the milestone of reaching their one hundredth day in Kindergarten. Students enjoyed a fun filled day of activities arranged by their teachers. They each received a cake and a certificate. The students dressed in green and each Kindergarten class planted a shrub in the garden behind G Block. A big thank you to all involved in the celebration and to Mr Han for digging the holes for the shrubs.

Ms Archer     Early Stage One Supervisor (Relieving)

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENT  2010

We now have over 60 enrolments for Kindergarten next year. Kindergarten students must turn FIVE years old by 31 July 2009, in order to be enrolled.  You will need to complete an enrolment form, bring proof of your child’s age (birth certificate if born in Australia or passport if born overseas), proof of address and an Immunisation History Statement. Documents to advise the school of any separation/access details e.g. court orders, if the situation applies, will need to be produced and a copy will be kept on file.  Please list current telephone numbers for home and work, and a contact person in case your child is sick or has an accident.  If your child has a medical condition such as asthma or severe allergies, speech/sight/hearing problem etc, please enter details on the enrolment form and supply a doctor’s or therapist’s report.

POLICE OPERATION

This is a warning that the school will be subject to police operations in the near future in regard to illegal parking. Parents should not park across driveways, in no parking zones, in bus zones, in front of pedestrian crossings or stop in the middle of the road to pick up children.  Traffic offences in school zones attract large fines over $350 for a parking offence as well as 2 demerit points.

ACCELERATED READER

Accelerated Reader is a program that operates in all Stage 3 classes and some of our Stage 2 classes. Students, who do Accelerated Reader, set a reading goal for themselves and they read books that are on the AR Booklist and then complete a quiz which give the students points towards their goal. The harder the book the more points the quiz is worth. The AR booklist can be located on the Carlton website.

The school is currently purchasing more AR books and quizzes to extend and strengthen the program. The Accelerated Reader books are held in the school’s library and students can find these books by looking for a special AR sticker after checking the AR booklist.  When a student reaches their set goal they are awarded a certificate.

CHOCOLATES

Thank you to the parents and students who have taken chocolates to sell. Your effort in selling the chocolates and raising money for the school will make a difference to what the school can do.  Everyone who has their chocolate money in by  Friday 14 August will go in the prize draw for:

1 Ipod

1 Portable DVD player

1 Digital Camera

1 Digital Camera

Four tickets will be drawn, with the first ticket drawn having first choice of a prize.

If you are unable to sell all of your chocolates please send them back to school ASAP as we have parents waiting to sell more boxes.

FATHERS’ DAY

The first Sunday in September is Fathers’ Day.  Our school will be holding a Fathers’ Day stall on Thursday 3 September in our school hall. To supplement our supply of gifts we are asking families to donate brand new or “as new” gifts that we can sell. Items such as coffee cups, golf ball sets, bar utensils, men’s handkerchiefs, toiletry items (such as deodorants, after shave, hair gels), keyrings, gardening items, torches, tools (small) etc.  Please leave the items in the special box at the front of each classroom.

LANCE THOMPSON CUP CHAMPIONS

Last Friday the Junior Rugby League team went to Win Jubilee Oval to play a demonstration match against Narwee P S as part of the Lance Thompson Rugby League tournament. The boys played extremely well against a very tough and determined opposition and were awarded the Cup at the end of the game in front of a packed stadium of thousands of onlookers. The highlight for many of the boys was seeing the Melbourne Storm up close on the field before the NRL game. Thank you to all the parents for their support and to Mr Patolo for his help on the day. The team of stage 2 boys were: Kanui Wilson, Ibrahim Srour, Mohamed Reslan, Gryffen Cunningham, Zane Cassim, Hussein Ayad, Morgan Leach-Riwai, D’Angelo Hunia, Timata Barber and Christian Patolo.

P&C MEETING

The next meeting of the P&C is on August 11th, 7:30pm in the staffroom. All parents and carers are invited to attend. Mrs Tollis will provide an update of the application for a new building and Mrs Beecham, the school’s NSW Teacher’s Federation Representative, will give an update on school funding.

PLAYGROUND AFTER SCHOOL

Students and parents are reminded that after school finishes there is no supervision of students. Students should not be on the play equipment, playing ball games or riding bikes. Students are not to return to school after leaving at home time.
