CAPTAINS' DAY

On Monday, Carlton PS was host to the third annual Captains' Day. School Captains from 10 local schools were invited to participate in a leadership training day. Sessions included a discussion about the highs and lows of being a captain and brainstorming ideas from each school. The Captains participated in a video conference with Parkes High School. They found out about being a school captain in a rural high school. A team from Kogarah Fire Station, led by Team Leader  Glenn, spoke about being a leader in difficult situations. The day finished with a fun game of “scooter soccer”. Thank you to the Carlton Captains and Vice- Captains, Anna, Remy, Tiarna and Marc, for being such great hosts. We are very fortunate to have such a great team of leaders. Thank you to Ms Flowers, Ms Rasmussen and Mr Clark for leading the activities on the day.

CHOCOLATES

Our chocolate drive will be finishing soon. Please send all money and any unsold chocolates back to school asap, as we have many families who are willing to take extra boxes. To be in the prize draw the chocolates need to be back by Friday 21 August, 2009.     Please remember if you are selling to the public, to always be with an adult. If you are in any public area, please behave appropriately. Carlton is a well resourced school and we value the community and your help in buying additional resources.     Thank you for your support.

BOOKWEEK

Next week we will be celebrating book week by having a performance in the school called “Jungle Bungle”. The cost is $4.   These shows are highly entertaining and will delight students and motivate them to read books. Please send note and money back to the school by Monday 17 August, 2009.

MINI FETE

Next Tuesday 18 August is our Mini Fete that Year 5 and 6 students have been planning for weeks. There will be lots of food to buy with BBQ’s, cafes and other food stalls plus games, face painting and a haunted house. The canteen will be selling Gelato. Parents don’t forget to visit the coffee cart.

Please don’t forget your money for the Mini Fete. Parents are very welcome to come along. The Mini Fete starts at 1pm. School uniform must be worn by all students, except Years 5 and 6.

BOOK FAIR

Last week we held our book fair.  This was a great opportunity to purchase good quality books. Thank you to Ms Phillips for all the work in organizing the book fair. It was a thrill to see so many children wanting to purchase books. The school is able to order books free from the proceeds of the book fair.

FATHERS’ DAY STALL

Every year the Community Club holds a Fathers Day Stall where children can buy a gift for their father or grandfather.  If you have any NEW, or “as new gifts” , that you could donate to our school, please send them along to your class teacher.  A Fathers’ Day box will be provided in each classroom for presents.   We also need parents to help tie ribbons around presents (approx 30 presents) at your home. This is an ideal opportunity for working parents to help by doing this at home. Please send your name and contact phone number to the office and we will contact you. The class that brings in the most items will receive Hungry Jacks vouchers and one class from every Stage that has the highest number of donated items will receive a packet of lollies for every child in that class.

EXPANDING HORIZONS CHOIR

On Monday 24 August, our Expanding Horizons Choir will be performing at the Opera House. This is going to be a spectacular concert with 250 students from China travelling to be part of the performance. Our choir will be singing with High School students and the quality of the sound produced is wonderful. Don’t forget to buy your tickets, there are still a few available through the Opera House booking office, at http://www.sydneyoperahouse.com/  You really won’t want to miss it.

YEAR 4 SPORTS EXCURSION TO REPLACE CAMP

Early in the year it was decided that Stage 2 would not hold a three day camp in 2009, for a variety of reasons.  The Year 4 camp will be replaced with a full day of sporting activities to encourage active lifestyles, and give students the opportunity for trying new skills. Sydney Olympic Park offers sports not regularly available to school students, such as European Handball and Badminton, with qualified and experienced coaches.  The excursion will be organised by Mr Rees (4R) and Mrs Christie (4A), and a note with more information will be going home later this term.

CRUNCH AND SIP

As part of Carlton's Personal Development, Health and Physical Education program, we have introduced a program called "Crunch and Sip". The program targets healthy eating and the drinking of water, not fruit juices or other types of drinks The children are encouraged to bring a piece of fruit or vegetable with a drink of water to school and  teachers will have "crunch and sip" time in the middle of the morning session. This affords the children a short 5 minute break to eat and drink and re-energizes them for the rest of the morning. It is also an opportunity to talk about "healthy" eating and its importance in their growth and development.

K-2 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all the students for a fantastic day at the carnival. All the teachers were very impressed by your behaviour and enthusiasm. The weather was fantastic, after the rain of the previous day. The ground staff commented about how well the school left the oval. Thank you to Mr Granger and his team for all their hard to work to organise such a great day.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENT FOR 2010

We already have around 65 enrolments for Kindergarten next year. We would ask that parents who have children starting school next year, to collect an enrolment form from the office. Also if you know of other people around the school who have children starting school next year, we would appreciate you letting them know it is time to enroll. Please remember that our school has strict enrolment boundaries for all new students and parents must be able to show the school proof of residence.  Siblings of students currently in Years Kindergarten to Year 5 of this year, 2009, are entitled to enroll whether they live within or outside of the school’s boundaries. Please see our web site for our enrolment policy http://www.carlton-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/.

ONLINE SAFETY

Keep your children safe online:

§         Spend time online with your kids. Check out good sites together. The internet can be a fun family activity!

§         Help your kids use the internet as an effective research tool - learn about handy homework tips for kids and also good searching techniques

§         Learn about the world out there. Kids are communicating in a diverse range of ways, from chat to IM, and from message boards to blogs. Learn how these work and what tools they offer to protect your child's privacy

§         Be aware of online stranger danger, particularly in chat rooms. Set house rules about what information your children can give out and where they can go online.

§         Children should not have access to the internet where parents are unaware what sites are being accessed  eg. A child should not be left alone in their bedroom with access to the internet.
