DEBATING NEWS

Last Thursday, the Peakhurst West debating team came to our school and debated against our team in the first round of the Interzone Finals.  The topic was a tough one, "That young people today are overly concerned with image". Carlton was the affirmative, which meant that we had to convince the adjudicator that we agreed with the topic statement and we won!  We are now off to the next round of the finals against Arncliffe Public School in week nine.  Congratulations to our fantastic debating team and Mrs Smith on their win and all of their hard work!

BUILDING NEWS

Painting is well under way in Block A. The project should take another 4 weeks. I’m sure everyone will be impressed at how fresh the building is looking with its new coat of paint.

Grounds refurbishment – We are hoping work will begin after the holidays to complete landscaping work around the games court and where demountables have been removed.

We are looking forward to commencement of our new building. A start date has not yet been set. The building will comprise 4 classrooms, in the same design as block G. This will be a fantastic addition to our school. The original plan was for 6 classrooms, but this has proved to be beyond the project budget. We are anticipating some funds to be released to improve existing classrooms as well.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS

Students in Year 4 recently participated in a “virtual excursion”. You can read some of their comments in the newsletter. In a virtual excursion, students can participate in an information session with a location such as a museum or an art gallery without leaving the school. Virtual excursions will never completely replace the traditional excursion, but they open up so many more opportunities. As you read the comments by 4W, you can see the value of the virtual excursion from all the things they learnt.

Hatching the Past – our Virtual Excursion

Comments from some 4W students

“Hatching the past” virtual excursion was about dinosaur eggs and babies. It was on the 3rd of September, 2009. It was a video conference with a museum in Bathurst with some other schools. We were guided by Professor Warren and Penny. It was quite interesting; especially the bit when a student from another school asked if dinosaurs lived underground and Prof. Warren said that archeologists found a dinosaur burrowing under the ground.      Clarence

First Ms Wood called the Australia Museum Of Fossils in Bathurst. When Ms Wood called in, we could see ourselves on the little TV attached to the wall. We had to wait for about five minutes for the museum to connect our school. When they finally did, they checked every school was there.    Maggie

I learnt that in one year a dinosaur could grow to 100 times its birth weight! I also learnt that I can’t create a dinosaur and have one as a pet. Boo hoo!  I think the virtual excursion could be improved by not having to check through all the schools at first. I think the VC was great and I’d like to have another.     Jack

I liked the part where they told us about the T-rex. I also liked the dinosaur eggs. A very fascinating thing was the baby dinosaur in the egg!  I learned many more dinosaur names such as the Seismosaurus or the Oviraptor.     Frank

The scientists used to think that Oviraptors stole eggs until they discovered a nest with an Oviraptor lying on it! Hence, they decided that the Oviraptors were protecting, not stealing, the eggs.    Roy

The best part of the virtual excursion was when we were saying things, actions to the microphone. I felt really tired because we sat for a long time on a chair.  I enjoyed the video conference but I think they should improve on showing the things because when they show something it’s really fast.      James

Interesting Facts:

  1. Dinosaurs with two legs and eat meat have oval shaped eggs.
  2. Dinosaurs with four legs, long necks and eat meat have sphere shaped eggs.
  3. When they find fossilised eggs, one out of five thousand eggs have a baby dinosaur in it.
  4. The dinosaur’s calf is bigger then a child or some are even bigger than a man.

My over all experience was great!!!       Emily
