Dear Parents & Caregivers,

All the staff of Carlton Public would like to acknowledge the outstanding work of our administrative and support staff. Only yesterday, a new Kindie Mum commented on the kindness and caring shown by one of the office staff to a child who was upset. Our admin staff constantly goes the extra mile to ensure that Carlton Public school runs efficiently. Many of them stay back, or come early, just so the job gets done. Our school grounds, front office, library, print room and teacher’s aides programs are all a testament to the wonderful staff we have.

MESSAGE FROM  DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING

This week is a special chance to recognise the vital contribution that school administrative and support staff make to schools, not just to their smooth running and presentation, but to the mighty job of preparing children to make their way in the world and influence it for good.

With my best regards on behalf of all my executive colleagues,

 Michael Coutts-Trotter

WHAT A WEEK!

OFFICIAL OPENING OF BLOCK G AND GAMES COURT

What a wonderful day it was to celebrate the new facilities that have been built at Carlton. The Honourable Robert McClelland, Federal Minister for Barton and Ms Cherie Burton, Member for Kogarah, officially opened the building. We would like to recognise the outstanding contribution Ms Burton has made to ensure our school has received funding to develop the excellent facilities we have. Our choirs and our Chinese and Maori dance groups performed beautifully. The ceremony was capably led by our school captains, Anna and Remy, and guests were entertained by Nellie Zhang on piano and Marc Betbeder-Matibet on saxophone.   Thank you to all staff for the hard work leading up to the event. Our guests commented on the quality of the performances and the wonderful behaviour of the audience.

Congratulations to Patrice Alkiviadou, whose artwork was selected for our commemorative bookmark.  Thank you, to everyone who submitted drawings. They will be returned asap.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION MORNING

Today we welcomed our new Kindies for 2010. Our current Kindies did a magnificent job show casing what they have achieved in their first year. Congratulations to Somya (KD) and Thomas (KMC) who led the assembly. Our Year 5 students were excited to meet their buddies for next year. This fantastic program develops leadership skills in our Year 5 students, as well as making a valuable connection for our new Kindies.  Parents were able to participate in a tour of the school and enjoy morning tea.

STUDENT LATENESS

The Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) regularly monitors the school attendance rolls. We need to bring the following to the attention of all parents.

·    School hours are 9am to 3pm. Students MUST attend during these hours.

·    If a student is late, the reason must be justified. Sleeping-in is NOT a justifiable reason.

·    If a student is late they must have a note to explain the lateness. Students who present at the office without a note, or without a parent to sign them in, will have their lateness marked as “unjustified”.

·    A note must be supplied on the day the student returns to school after an absence. Failure to do so may have the absence recorded as unjustified.

·    If there is a pattern of absences that have not been justified, the HSLO may be required to investigate. Legal proceedings can be an outcome of poor attendance.

SELECTIVE HIGH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS

Year 5 students looking for placement in a Selective High School for Year 7 in 2010, are required to make an application this year while they are in Year 5.  If you would like your child to go to a selective high school, you will need to get an application from the school. All completed applications must be returned to the school by 13 November, 2009. Please remember that only the top 8% of students get into a Selective High School and if your child did not achieve the top bands in the recent NAPLAN tests for both English and Maths then it is most unlikely that your child will be successful in gaining entry to a Selective High School.

PARENTS NOTE:

  • Do not use a downloaded copy of the application form, it must be an original form supplied by the school.
  • Complete in BLACK PEN
  • USE BLOCK LETTERS
  • Don’t use correction fluid
